Let’s be real—decluttering can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re someone who tends to put things off. As an interior designer and a self-confessed procrastinator, I get it. The idea of tackling an entire home can be daunting, but here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it all at once.
Spring is the perfect time for a fresh start, and with a strategic approach, even the biggest procrastinators (myself included) can create a space that feels intentional, functional, and visually stunning. Let’s break it down into manageable, design-focused steps.
Why Decluttering Matters
You might love the idea of an effortlessly stylish home, but clutter can overshadow even the best design choices. Whether you're embracing maximalism or a more streamlined look, decluttering has major benefits:

Where to start?
Before you start, create a vibe that makes decluttering feel less like a chore and more like a creative reset.

-Set the mood and mindset: If the thought of decluttering a room makes you want to quit before you even start, don't do it. Instead, tackle one section at a time.
-Use the 'One Touch Rule' : When you pick something up , make a decision on that object immediately-this way you won't put it down thinking "I'll decide on this later". Believe me, your future self will thank you!
-Create Sections to delegate; such as:
*Keep
*Donate
*Trash
Create Zones for items you plan to keep for easy maintenance:
Use boxes, baskets, trays etc. making it effortless to keep things tidy.
The Designer Approach
The “Designer’s Edit” Trick
Think like a stylist. Instead of mindlessly sorting through everything, ask yourself: Would I style this in a client’s home?

Add a ‘Wow Factor’ as a Reward
Once the clutter is gone, treat yourself to a little design upgrade:
Swap out pillows for a fresh seasonal look.
Style a cluttered shelf with intention.
Add a statement piece to anchor the space.
In closing
Decluttering and spring cleaning don’t have to feel overwhelming, even if you tend to put things off. With a few strategic steps (and a little designer magic), you can create a space that reflects your style without the stress.
And remember, your home should work for you—not the other way around. Start small, embrace the process, and watch your space (and mindset) transform.
